Tears flow freely as families , friends and activists gathered on Thursday night at Julius Berger bus stop in Abuja to hold a candlelight procession in honour of the slain journalist late Alex Ogbu.
Ogbu was murdered in a cold blood by police on January 21 when the officers fired live ammunition at the protesting members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria ( IMN ) over the continued detention of their leader , Ibraheem El-zakzaky at berger roundabouts .
The mourners who dressed in customised black T-Shirts with the portrait of the late journalist gathered at the ever busy berger bus stop where he was killed.
Speaking at the procession , Kunle Wiseman said the activists and civil society groups would not stop in demanding for the prosecution of the officer who killed him.
Wiseman said ” We want to tell the world that till date despite the autopsy that confirmed that comrade Alex Ogbu was gunned down and murdered by the police officers attached to Utako police station here at berger bus stop.
” Today we still cry for justice , the police officer who shot him has not been brought to justice . The police have not even yielded to one of our demands that compensation should be paid to the wife , child and families . That the officer who shot him be brought to book ”
” We want to say that Nigerian police do not have the right to use live arms against protesters ” He said.
The mourners called on Nigerians and people of conscience to stand up for justice for the deceased and speak up against the brutality of Nigerian police using live ammunitions on protesters.
The wife of the deceased , Francisca Ogbu who spoke in tears vowed to continue with the ideal and legacy of fighting for humanity and freedom left behind by her husband.
She said ” I call on Nigerians to join me. I need your support because I cannot do it alone . This is not me , this is my husband fighting and that is the spirit that has been carrying me. I want you to join me and fight this battle to the end .
” Let Nigerians stand up enough is enough. Today I am a widow but tomorrow it can be anybody . Today my child is fatherless . Until we stand up and say no to injustice and unlawful killing ” Francisca said in tears.
The activists would on Tuesday 10th March present a formal petition to the leadership of the National Assembly , National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC ) and other rights organisations.
The procession was attended by Committee for Defence of Human Rights ( CDHR ) , Coalition for Revolution ( CR ) , United Action for Democracy ( UAD ) and Take It Back Movement ( TIB ), Coalition for Real Change and Social Action ( SA ).
Recall that police in an attempt to cover up the crime and change the narratives lied that the late Ogbu fell and hit his head on the iron . They also twisted the story that he was an accident victim.
